On April 17-21 the National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week - INNO Armenia-2023 was held in Armenia and was organized by the National Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (NCIE) of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia.

The Innovation Week was officially opened by a welcoming speech of James Bagyan, an American astronaut, doctor, engineer, and the first and only person of Armenian descent to have been in space.

Hayk Margaryan, the CEO of our Center, welcomed all participants and stated that INNO Armenia aims to establish a dialogue between business, science and state, and create a platform for productive interaction between all parties.

The National Innovation and Entrepreneurship Week - INNO Armenia-2023 is organized with the support of the Prime Minister’s office of RA, Ministry of Economy of RA, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs and National Center Foundation.

In his welcoming remarks, the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs of RA, Zareh Sinanyan, emphasized that the National Week is a good opportunity not only to discuss the scientific and innovative capabilities but also to highlight prospective development.

Sinanyan's speech was followed by the official signing ceremony of the Memorandum of Cooperation between our Center and the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs. "The Memorandum will allow bringing cooperation between the two structures onto a new level", Z. Sinanyan stated.

Assistant to the Prime Minister of Armenia Hakob Abrahamyan, speaking on the topic of "Innovation and Entrepreneurship in the context of Armenia's transformation strategy", highlighted that transformation processes cannot be launched without the application of innovation. "Innovation and entrepreneurship are critical and are also strategic priorities. "Armenia can obtain a significant competitive advantage by emphasizing and strengthening these areas".

The Deputy Minister of Economy of Armenia, Ani Ispiryan, also delivered official speech. She emphasized that science and innovation play a special role in business development. In reference to the AMADEE-24, she expressed her hope that Mars mission will have a special place in the list of successful initiatives that have been implemented through joint efforts.

The first two days of the National Week, April 17 and 18, were held at TUMO Center for Creative Technologies, whose founder, Marie Lou Papazian, sincerely welcomed the attendees, wishing them a productive week.

The signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Austrian Space Forum and the Armenian Aerospace Agency CJSC on implementing the AMADEE-24 Mars Analogue Mission in Armenia was the highlight of the National Week.

The Memorandum was signed by the head of the Armenian Aerospace Agency CJSC, Mher Mehrabyan, and the director of the Austrian Space Forum, Gernot Gromer. "Members of the first real mission to Mars were already born in New York, Beijing, or possibly Yerevan, but they are unaware of it", G. Groemer explained. According to preliminary estimations of Mr.Groemer, the first manned flight to Mars,l will take place in 20-30 years.

Hayk Chobanyan, General Director of the Union of Advanced Technologies Enterprises (UATE), from his side, urged Armenian educational institutions to make the most of this historic opportunity and be actively engaged in the project's preparations.

It should be highlighted that INNO Armenia has an international component, and the AMADEE-24 Mars analog mission is strategically important for Armenia.

The National Week brought together local and foreign entrepreneurs, scientists, and diplomats, as well as ambassadors and consuls of a number of foreign countries.
There was an exchange of important information and experience in the field of technology commercialization.

Different panel discussions took place during the Week and they were dedicated to space exploration, sustainable economy in Armenia, development of artificial intelligence (AI), and achievements in bioinformatics and nanotechnology.

The National Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship hosted the Commission's second session on reviewing applications received within the framework of the reimbursement program on attracting highly qualified specialists to work in Armenia.

Upon the decision of the Commission, 9 highly qualified specialists were selected to participate in the reimbursement program.
Overall, the Commission discussed applications submitted by 5 organisations since 2023.

A modern model of technology transfer, charging stations for electric cars, and bionic prostheses are what Armenia showcased at the Digital Almaty 2023 forum, attended by the Prime Minister of RA, Nikol Pashinyan.

The annual Forum «Digital Almaty 2023: Digital partnership in the new reality» ended in Kazakhstan, which the Prime Ministers of EAEU countries attended.

On February 2nd, the delegation headed by the Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan left for Kazakhstan to take part in the Forum.

Hayk Margaryan, the CEO of our Center, also took part in the Forum.

In his speech, Nikol Pashinyan mentioned that the development of the digital economy was and will be one of the most critical priorities for the Republic of Armenia. He added that in 2022, the turnover in the IT sector increased by more than 50%, and the share of the Communication and Information Technology sector in the GDP of Armenia is steadily growing.

«We, from our side, provide state sector support to the IT business. Over the past year, more than 1,000 startups have received substantial tax breaks. In addition, the issue of forming a single digital space in the Eurasian integration area remains essential for us. In that regard, I would like to note the modernity and high demand of the toolkit of the interstate information exchange system, as well as the creation and development of digital projects with an integration effect», - said Nikol Pashinyan.

Our Center's CEO, Hayk Margarian, introduced the attendees of the Forum to the new model of the National Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, planned for the creation of the Technology Transfer Office in Armenia. In his speech during the panel discussion on «State promotion of innovation development in EAEU countries», he emphasized that «no serious development should be expected without the introduction of a knowledge-based economy».

In this framework, creating a link between knowledge and business is crucial, and it is one of the primary issues for our Center. Hayk Margarian also presented several state programs aimed at supporting medium and small companies, mentioning that Armenia is among the top ten countries in terms of ease of registering new businesses​.

Moreover, he said that to increase labor productivity in enterprises, the Government of Armenia launched a cost-covering program for the salaries of highly qualified specialists from abroad, which our Center successfully implements. Since the program's launch, 14 applications for 248 professionals have already been submitted. Hayk Margarian also presented state support programs for young scientists, the project of creating an engineering city, and various innovative developments that have already been commercialized and presented abroad.

The CEO of our Center invited the organizers of the Forum and all attendees to participate in the «National Week of Innovation and Entrepreneurship» on April 17, 2023. NCIE is hosting this event for the first time, and it is unprecedented in terms of its scope, format, and the number of invited specialists from across the world.

More than 100 sample developments of the IT sector were presented at various exhibitions organized within the framework of the Forum. The latest developments in robotics, AR / VR, drones, and exoskeletons were demonstrated in the Innovation Center zone. The Armenia exhibition included Ultra-sensitive seismic transmitters, chargers for electric cars, etc.

«Digital Almaty» is the largest event in the field of innovative technologies on the territory of the CIS, attended by business representatives, international experts, IT associations, state institutions, and media.

Memorandum of Cooperation and Understanding was signed between The National Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship of the Ministry of Economy of the Republic of Armenia and the National Agency for the Development of Innovations - "QazInnovations" of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The official signing ceremony took place on February 3 as part of the «Digital Almaty 2023» International Forum.

The Memorandum was signed by the CEO of our Center, Hayk Margaryan, and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the National Agency for the Development of Innovations - "QazInnovations" Sanat Akhanov.

The purpose of the Memorandum is to foster business-science collaboration and provide assistance in establishing regular contacts between scientific organizations and entrepreneurs.

The participants of the MBA in Healthcare Management Program were hosted at the National Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship within the «Meet the CEO» extracurricular course.

During the visit, Raffy Semerdjian, General Secretary of the International Chamber of Commerce National Committee Armenia - ICC NCA and founder of the «Management Mix», introduced the master's program participants and provided information on their achievements in the healthcare sector.

Hayk Margarian, the CEO of our Center, talked about the Center’s program on reimbursement of salaries to highly qualified specialists. The terms of the project were actively discussed.

Our Center's experts gave more details on how to do business in Armenia, as well as they provided explanations of governmental entrepreneurial support programs and legislative initiatives.

The MBA in Healthcare Management Program is implemented by the Faculty of Public Health of Yerevan State Medical University in cooperation with the «Management Mix» international consulting organization. The one-year program, which has 100 alumnis, began in 2017, and currently the sixth generation is being educated. The project's main goal is to enhance the healthcare sector through the provision of modern managerial practical knowledge and skills.

At the «ICT Leaders Meeting» forum under the title «Supporting Dialogue» held in Dilijan on January 13, Hayk Margarian, the CEO of NCIE, talked about the business support programs implemented by our Center.

The «ICT Leaders Meeting» is initiated by the Union of Advanced Technology Enterprises-UATE. The Forum was organized with the support of the «EU for Business» initiative and the «Development of innovative tourism and technologies for Armenia» program.

Representatives of governmental institutions, the private sector, and professional community discussed several sectorial issues and challenges. The articulated proposals and options for solving the issues will be finalized by the #UATE and included in the upcoming year's organizational plans.

Hayk Margarian, the CEO of NCIE, presented the business support programs implemented by the Center and highlighted the reimbursement program for the salaries of highly-qualified specialists.

"MIR 24"- For entrepreneurs, government support is often the only path to development. According to the National Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship's estimations, most newly opened companies in Armenia are closed due to the impossibility of bringing the idea into the production stage. Based on this reality, the state actively developed support for innovative developments. We recently reached an agreement with the Office of the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs on developing a road map to exchange information and support for Diaspora Armenian entrepreneurs.

During the meeting, the CEO of our Center, Hayk Margarian, and the High Commissioner for Diaspora Affairs, Zareh Sinanyan, agreed to prepare a draft of the Cooperation Agreement with the following pre-planned directions of cooperation:

  • The State program for covering the costs of salaries of highly qualified specialists can become the continuation of the strategy of attracting high-level specialists to Armenia;
  • Within The "Diaspora Youth's Ambassadors" program initiated by the Office of High Commissioner for Diaspora affairs, young diaspora ambassadors are empowered to become the representatives of our Center in their countries of residence, to establish ties with local state structures;
  • Development of a road map of support to Diaspora-Armenian scientists and entrepreneurs, as well as the creation of a database of projects requiring investment;

The parties also agreed on information exchange regarding currently implemented programs and projects.
